Sunday 28th March 2010 : After failing a
late fitness test I resorted back to watching this evenings session
which was very lively and entertaining. Matt Pink was drafted in to
replace me in my squad and did his best to fill the playmakers role.
Over the night they remained unbeaten
and
deservedly found themselves top of the pile. Chris Todd was on fire
early on belting them in from everywhere, obviously drawing
inspiration from his new kit which caused quite a stir. The lads
nick named him "Black Mambo" and a couple of others which would be
quite inappropriate to publish here. John Goodwin looked a happier
bunny tonight scoring a hat trick in a later game. The goals flowed
throughout John's team with Paulo smacking in a couple of his trade
mark volley's. Robbie failed to reach the dizzy scoring heights he
set himself last week but team mates Rick Pott and Mike Adrio both
managed some very tasty strikes.
Our leader Zsu Zsu Mastin will be back next week to try and lift the
spirits of what is left of Mary's Moaners and if one or two more
return we could be down or should I say up, to six a side.

Sunday 4th April 2010 : I was
feeling pretty good tonight so decided to get the old trainers on
and do a shift in goal at the Leisure Centre. Having watched City
rattle 6 past Burnley yesterday and Stretford go down at home to
Chelsea I was really in the mood for a good thrash. Slightly
disappointed when I arrived to see only ten of us turning out after
last weeks near full house. Still it turned out OK
and we enjoyed a really difficult but, testing hour and a
half. Two best out of ten games left us at one match apiece and both
by the odd goal. Goals were very hard to come by mainly through some
excellent defending rather than poor finishing. Zsu Zsu returned
from his trip to troubled Ireland, suffering a deluge of disgust at
the behaviour of some of their Priests and the inability of the
ageing German Pope to quell the unrest. This didn't prevent the old
Cockney hippie from putting in a blinding contribution to what's
left of Mary's Moaners. From my vantage point in nets I had the
privilege of watching Robbie's superb input as the last line of our
defence. Robbie really has found his true position and a very
frustrated Rick Evans would surely back that up as the Baggie had
him in his pocket all night. Nigel Caldwell worked just as
hard for the Moaners and was instrumental in their success, so much
so that he was approached in the dressing room to join the Mary's
boys. For me that would be a severe no no unless he found a way to
learn how to badger the ref and swear like a trooper....

Sunday 11th April 2010 : The Baggies
return to the premiership was celebrated tonight by a Westwood-fest
when Robbie, Richard and Robbie’s daughter’s boyfriend Tim joined
forces with Bud and the long-awaited Ronnie Buttery to take on the
Moaners and Proudy’s rather truncated squad. Missing Houghie’s
playmaking and Chris Anthony’s velvety skills, Proudy, Chris Todd
and the ever-dangerous Stevie Gerrard went through the evening
without losing a match, aided by Malc Stubbs and Nigel Caldwell. The
Moaners standard squad - Zsu Zsu, Chris Podmore, Paulo, Ricky Evans
and Johnboy – had moments of glory, including two world-class
strikes from Paulo, but never achieved the consistency that their
endeavours deserved. Ronnie meanwhile maintained his bid for the
Cusser of the Year award.
Next week should see the return of the master himself and others of
his squad, with Chris Garlick also set to make a come-back after
injury. Maybe there’ll be more to celebrate – City in Europe,
Charlton getting automatic promotion, Stockport County purchased by
an Arab. Who knows?
Superb report from our guest writer.
After a long weekend away I'm eager to join in the weekly thrash at
the Leisure Centre hopefully on the back of a fine victory over the
rags from Stretford......COME ON CITY.......

Sunday 18th April 2010 : After losing a
Derby game to our neighbours from Stretford what better way to
get it out of the system than a ninety minute thrash at the Leisure
Centre.
Three
full 5 a side teams allowed me to stand down and give my ever
improving knee another weeks rest. No outstanding team this week but
plenty of action and no shortage of goals. What a pleasure to see
the lads giving it the Full Monte without any bother. Zsu Zsu showed
early doors that as the most senior player on view he could still
rasp 'em in with a salvo of quality drives. Paulo Garner chipped in
with one of his trademark volleys and we were also treated to a few
of Mike Adrio's master-class cameo's which defy description. Young
Chris Podmore looked as sharp as Ron's tongue which took all of 35
minutes to ignite. I swapped places with Zsu Zsu for the last couple
of games but found it hard to match the old hippies contribution to
Mary's Moaners squad resulting in a heavy defeat and a hard fought
draw. All in all this was probably yet another fine turn out by the
vets and a great example of why the lads keep rolling up week after
week for their 5 a side fix.

Sunday 18th April 2010 : A seriously
enjoyable ninety minutes at the Leisure Centre tonight as three
teams went into combat against each other without the old Cockney
Hippie, Zsu Zsu Mastin who wa s
back home in London, not I might add to compete in the London
Marathon. More like slopping down the old Pie and Mash, probably the
most inedible food on this planet only ever consumed by Cockney's.
With one aging playmaker unavailable I had to step back into the
breach enabling me to inspire my team to a full session, without a
win. No excuses from the not so magnificent five who stumbled from
defeat to defeat with the odd draw thrown in. Great for me though to
complete a full session without any problems from my long injury
nightmare, I was beginning to think that was my lot!!
So it was left to the other two teams to contest the top team
honours. Ron Buttery had the luxury of two academy players to do his
running and Richard Westwood in particular showed us he's going to
be a pretty decent footballer with some spectacular goals. Bud
Jackson impressed with some super saves in nets whilst Chris
Garlick's play defied the fact that he had already turned out for a
full 90 minutes for Hayfield in the morning. With no senior Mary's
Moaners on view young Chris Podmore ably led his team of goal
scorers in great style. Rick Evans and Rick Pott both hit fine goals
to add to Paulo's usual brace of 20 yarders. So there wasn't a lot
between these two teams but it will be interesting to see if Zsu
Zsu's and John boys return will make the difference next week or
will Chris (guitar man) Todd reenergise my flagging squad, watch
this space.....

Sunday 2nd May 2010 : A brilliant day of football with the Premier
and Championships both having a shed load of season defining matches
and to cap it all 90 minutes with the Vets at the Leisure Centre.
City still on course for fourth place, Stretford still in with an
outside chance of the Premie r
League but Matt Pink's Owls are dumped back into the 3rd rung now
called division one. So not surprising Matt was one of the many
absentee's this evening who missed a mixed session contested by
eleven good men. In fairness the Ron Buttery Rotation System is a
good way to organise a game with eleven participants but there's no
substitute for a good thrash with three squads. At times the
football wasn't as keenly contested as it should be but we all
enjoyed a good kick around played in good spirit. Ron and myself
were both handicapped by limbs which refused to operate at their
optimum levels due to a mixture of inactivity and ability to support
the weight they were carrying. Still I personally doubled my number
of goals from last week to two, and Ron in my opinion had a decent
enough night so that was two of us who were happy to hand over our
fivers. Chris Todd started brilliantly banging in the goals and
really getting stuck in. Great to see Rick Pott smacking a couple
past Ron after the big fella had been giving him some serious stick.
Myself and Chris Anthony were both at the COMSTAD yesterday going
through all the drama that goes with being a City fan and we'll have
to do it all again on Wednesday when Spurs will do their best to
spoil our party yet again. We're both used to that but if for once
things go our way then don't be surprised if we're both late next
Sunday as the West Ham game finishes at 18:00 - The following Monday
(10th May) will see Proudy playing at Ewood Park (19:00 kick off) in
one of those Charity thingy's with the old players. I will be going
so if anyone wants to go and support the lad I've got 4 spare seats
in the Limo, admission to the ground a fiver.
FOOTYNOTE - If you
haven't yet decided who to vote for next Thursday or just want a
change by voting for someone you know (no not Ron), give our old
mate Alistair Stevens (Liberal Democrat) who often graced the
Leisure Centre in our Vets sessions a try. A decent guy whose only
failing is his football skills and dodgy knees.

9th May 2010 : The Premier season
ended today with Chelsea winning 8-0. I can't remember if City ever
did the double on the League winners in any season, still that
doesn't ease the pain of Wednesday night when Spurs yet again poured
rain on our parade.
The vets tonight had a good turnout in spite of all the final days
Premier games being on Sky. Three teams again locked horns in some
excellent games from all sides. My team won our first game in a
fortnight half way through the proceedings and that was our only
victory this evening. Our big problem was a mixture of poor
finishing and good goalkeeping.
Proudy was handicapped by an aging team which had an average age of
over 50 which in it's own way is quite an achievement. The other two
teams battled it out for the honour of being top team but in the end
I spent much of the time trying to get air into my lungs that I
never managed to notice who indeed ended on top although, I suspect
Matt's team may have shaded it. Matt had one of those night's where
the goals wouldn't flow as normal but with Mike Adrio and young
Richard Westwood both hitting the mark that wasn't a problem. Young
Richard made the mistake of using his speed to go past John Goodwin
in one game but he couldn't escape the assassin who gave him a
gentle tap to remind him no to take the p. Chris Podmore again had a
useful night with Paulo and Rick Pott both chipping in with some
fine strikes. Again a really enjoyable 90 minutes football which
leads me into new territory next week as I hit my sixty fourth year.
I look back to when we first started in June 1988 and Mooro said to
me, "I wonder if we can still be playing when we're 50 Malc?"
Well we both made that and set the next target at sixty which we
also managed. I can tell you now from this point it gets harder each
week with the knocks, wear & tare taking longer to heal. Monday
mornings can be more painful than losing to the rags but, no time to
stop because when you do it's good night Irene hello to old age. Now
I set my targets a little more sensibly so my next one is to be
playing when I pick up my Pension if my ailing body allows me. Zsu
Zsu is not far behind and fingers crossed we'll both be still
setting our targets well into the future.
Big events this week as Proudy plays at Ewood Park on Monday night
(19:00 KO) and Zsu Zsu's Charlton play Swindon in the play offs next
Friday on SKY (19:45 KO) as they attempt to return to the
Championship.

Sunday 16th May 2010 : 64 years young today and another milestone
reached but the biggest surprise of all is how little things change.
No surprises in the Cup Final yesterday, and no surprise that I
wasn't the only one not interested in who won or lost. Not the best
session we've ever played tonight at the Leisure Centre but as usual
I think we all went home pretty pleased with the outcome. Paulo kept
up
his habit of banging in one of the goals of the night and Mike Adrio
mesmerised us with his trickery which included a rare headed goal. John-boy blew his top a couple of
times and Ron gave his team mates the benefit of his years of
bollacking's a much unappreciated airing. Nigel scampered around
tackling like a dog after a bone giving no quarter and Rick Pott
continues to score spectacular goals with the regularity of Haley's
Comet appearing over New Mills. The main thing that never changes is
the regularity of the boys turning out every week to give us the
opportunity to keep doing the thing we all look forward to each
Sunday that is to kick lumps out of each other, have a good old moan
and hopefully play a game of football.
I have had to submit to a medical check up to clear up my knee problem
which is becoming a handicap not only to me but to my unfortunate
team mates who are saddled with a crock. I'll still play on whilst I
have one good leg (that belted in a few more goals tonight) but, I
fear I may have to go under the surgeon's knife to reach full
fitness again. I may apply for mobility allowance.....
Proudy played at Ewood Park on Monday night and what a super night
it turned out to be. I'll be posting a page with a match report and
plenty of pics to put you in the picture some time in the week.

Sunday 23rd May 2010 :
Who would be daft enough to play 5 a side football on the hottest
day of the year so far? Well the quick answer is twelve vets
definitely were and they put in a good shift as well. I am well
pleased at getting through the full 90 minutes on my much improved
injured knee and actually netted a couple of times. My team though
were well under par with Chris Todd suffering
from
a serious bout of late drinking, Chris Anthony, Nigel and myself all
found the going on the tough side managing only a single win. Ron
inspired his squad to take the honours for the night with Chris
Garlick and Mike Adrio forming a very good partnership. Rick Pott
put himself about as he always does and typifies what the vets are
all about, much effort and full commitment. Rick's off to
Lanzagrottie next week where he will no doubt rest his battered body
before returning as keen as ever. Zsu Zsu Mastin had Chris Podmore
back to liven up his team and the boy gave it a real old go, oh to
have those young legs again. John boy gave us a reminder that the
Silent Assassin still lurks within his aging frame as he gave Chris
Garlick a tickle round the ankle, you hardly saw John blink and the
boy was on the deck rolling round like Didier Drogba. I set myself
to prevent Mike Adrio making a mug of me with his habit of nut
megging his opponents, it makes you feel so useless. I managed it
until late on when I was in goals and he drew me to the edge of the
area to slip it straight through the old pins for a late winner.
Tackle of the evening was Ron's straight forearm smash on Nigel who
never even got a free kick!! Did Nigel moan, no he just got up
dusted himself off and carried on, classic Nigel.....
Oh what a day yesterday for Blackpool, now a Premier League team,
couldn't happen to a better bloke than Ian Holloway. Last week while
being interviewed he was asked what he had in common with Blackpool,
his reply, "we both look better with the lights out!"

Sunday 30th May 2010 : With only eleven days to go to the World Cup
Finals in South Africa we all watched with interest England's last
warm up game against Japan in Austria. What a disappointment,
a 2-1 win with Japan scoring all the goals. Win it, I don't think so .
I didn't hear anyone even mention it at the Leisure Centre tonight
as the lads turned out for their weekly fix. Only eleven tonight but
I must say it was an extremely competitive session which I
personally enjoyed immensely. Who couldn't have admired Keith Mastin
for wearing probably the most outrageously naff pair of trainers
ever seen at one of our 5 a side sessions. The Reebok Gold and
Silver numbers were acquired in a closing down sale in Morecombe for
the princely sum of £7.50 - he was robbed believe me. Did they make
the old hippie play better, errrr, no!! Another master class from
Mike Adrio was one of many good performances tonight including a
much improved Chris Anthony along with 90 minutes of all action from
Chris Podmore.
Rick Evans and myself dropped into the Hare and Hounds later on to
watch Chris Todd and his band, The Carbs entertain a packed pub with
their quality Rhythm and Blues music. Good music, good beer and a
great atmosphere. So roll on next week for more of the same.

Sunday 6th June 2010 : Another bazzing session tonight with two
sides giving it the gun for 90 uninterrupted minutes in three first
to ten matches. My squad was out in force this evening
bolstered
by the return of Steve Gerrard who looked like he had never been
away. Steve and Proudy set off like an express train sweeping Zsu
Zsu's much younger team aside with some great finishing. Slowly the
much younger squad began to get back into the game and at 8-8 took
advantage of a couple of misplaced passes and a bunch of super saves
by Rick Evans to take the first game 10-8. Heads dropped and Mike
Adrio inspired his team to an easy win in the second match to lead
2-0 overall. A much more all round team performance saw my squad end
the night on a winning note with a fine 10-6 win. Super stuff from
all the lads.
Well it's finally here at the end of this coming week, the World Cup
in Africa. Brace yourselves for what may just turn out to be the
finest sporting event the planet has ever witnessed. A Nelson
Mandela inspired nation will hope the Bafana Bafana squad can do an
"Invictus" and inspire their team to do the impossible. As for our
boys, who knows! Can Rooney live up to his much inflated
reputation or even manage to keep his temper in check if things go
tits up? Will the loss of Rio make a jot of difference to a creaky
defence? Will Shauny get the chance to do his stuff? Will Crouchie
reinstate the robot dance? I don't know but I sure hope that by the
time we roll up next Sunday at the Leisure Centre we've spanked the
Yanks and kept the dream alive - COME ON ENGLAND!!!!

Sunday 6th June 2010 : The World Cup fever has set in - or at least
it has with the vets because we could only muster nine this evening.
Maybe the disappointment of only drawing with the Yanks on Saturday
had something to do with it. Personally it came as no surprise to
me, we get so used to the build up before realising we are just an
average team.
Meanwhile the boys who did bother to turn out enjoyed a decent
enough session with Mike Adrio's team giving Zsu
Zsu's
mish mash outfit the proverbial run around. The extra man turned out
to be a handicap as Mike and Chris Podmore ripped them to shreds
with their passing and pace, well young Chris's pace and Mike's
passing really. Nigel defended superbly and Rick never gave up all
night. I'm not sure why Zsu Zsu's team failed to gel but they just
didn't hit it off together. Poor passing, poor shooting and poor
defending is never going to win you games but strangely after losing
three best of ten games it all clicked - a 5-1 win in the last of
the night, funny old game 'aint it...
I've twisted the old knee again and it's giving me some gip as I
write this but it isn't going to beat me, maybe I'll have to miss a
couple of weeks but I'll be back. Hopefully by the time you read
this Rick Evans will have been married at Gretna Green and set off
to Las Vegas for his honeymoon, good luck to the boy and his lady.
Finally, if England can't beat Algeria next Friday then our World
Cup will be over and we will have to wait another four years for the
next pointless build up - am I being negative, YES I am.
