Marple IV 18
New Mills 05
It wasn’t cricket….Oh no!!
I guess we’d expected (and hoped
for) an easy game to round off the
season, but then Marple had other
plans, and put out a team that was
much stronger than expected. Dave
started off the evening against
Jonathan Crebbin, and seemed to be
suffering from the cold courts, with
completely white fingers. Although
Dave always looked the better player
on past form, he struggled to impose
his game and, dropping the third,
looked as if the match might go the
whole way. Fortunately Dave managed
to pick up again to close out the
4th and take the first rubber of the
match (also putting Dave at no 2 in
the Division overall – a very
creditable result). Ian then went on
at 5 against the young Russell
Wickens, who has had a mixed season.
Ian was out of the blocks like a
greyhound and shot to a 6-0 lead
before Russell was able to get into
his stride and found some winning
drop shots. Although Ian was able to
hold on for the first game, the next
two were dominated by Russell’s
accurate volleys, intercepts and
unbelievable flukes. Ian regrouped
for the 4th, raised the pace, and
was able to put Russell under
pressure again, securing a game
point but succumbing to a 10-8 loss
through two more irretrievable
flukes from Russell. If Ian had been
able to enforce his game earlier,
the outcome might have been
different, but he had to concede to
a better home player on the night.
Jan then faced Anton Kleban again,
having lost 3-1 to him in the first
half. In the first set, Anton played
the same style as Jan, with weighted
lobs and accurate drops, and Jan was
not able to get into her stride. As
Anton tired, Jan was able to
increase the pressure and put in
some excellent rallies. At times,
and after a number of characteristic
rants with the marker to increase
her adrenaline, she looked as if she
might turn the tables, but Anton
stuck to his plan and was able to
eke out another 3-1 win.
Charlie was completely overwhelmed
by Mark D’Souza, who looks to be
playing well below his position in
the 4th team. His court sense and
ball play, presumably from previous
racket sports, were refreshing, but
difficult for Charlie to read, and
with Charlie being somewhat off
form, Mark was able to impress his
game and run out an easy winner.
This left Rick to salvage some pride
for the team, and although he seemed
suitably motivated, once on court,
his game was lacklustre, full of
errors with poor lengths and most of
his trademark drop shots hitting the
tin. Anthony Spring was quick to
capitalise on what was surely one of
Rick’s worst performances this year,
and a shame for him to go out on
this form when he has played so well
throughout the season. So a
disappointing night, but a friendly
affair, rounded off by the usual
soup, curry and banter and a fine
pint or two of Black Sheep.
It’s been a long year, using only 8
players, so achieving 5th
spot against
some quality competition is
commendable. The season has seen an
improvement in some team members,
and willingness in others to try and
compete at what is still a
relatively high level. If we can
encourage a few more people to pick
up the baton, and if the league
reforms for the next season, we may
be able to consider fielding a
regular second team. The rest is up
to the players.
Thanks to our
guest writer for an excellent report
and accurate summery.
New Mills 07 Hyde CC IV 17
Squash over
the past few years has somewhat
waned with clubs dropping teams at
an alarming rate. New Mills were
once able to field six teams with
clubs such as Stockport fielding
many more. Standards have
undoubtedly dropped across the board
so it came as a pleasant surprise to
find Hyde Cricket Club still able to
turn out their lowest side with a
very strong line-up. Certainly too
strong for what I feel was a decent
enough New Mills team in their
penultimate match. Only Dave
Cartwright came up to the winning
mark with a very creditable 3-1 win
against "Dangerous" Dave
Lloyd-Jones. DLJ's nick name is now
undeserved and this relative
newcomer is going to be a player to
be reckoned with next season.
Charlie Bishop gave Bill "The Glove"
Ward a run for his money and was
possibly unlucky to lose the fourth
game after putting his opponent
under great pressure. Jan Butler
pushed Pete Davies all the way in a
cracking five setter. In a typical
Jan match we had the full repertoire
from our lady player with all the
shots, a bit of afters and a
roasting or three for the marker to
get her motivated. The only thing
missing was a few more drop shots at
appropriate times which could have
reversed the result. Ian Johnson
also had his moments against Nigel
Howes but in spite of some superb
winning shots that are Ian's
trademark, Nigel always had the
edge. It seems strange to see Nigel
at the bottom of the team order but
he insists his form is not at all to
his liking, you could have fooled
me. My own game was very
disappointing and certainly not to
my liking. I just couldn't cope with
Peter Ward's short game and although
I managed a third game win it only
delayed the inevitable as Peter
mopped up with consummate ease.
A very pleasant night's sport was
topped off with an excellent Chinese
supper with a good bunch of lads
from the Hyde Club.
Next week brings the last fixture of
the season with a trip to Marple and
hopefully a return to winning ways.
Glossop II 05 New Mills 17
Rivals put in their place!
\nd a subdued Jan
struggled against Paul, who had the
measure of Jan’s game, which isn’t
the same when the lobs aren’t quite
right & the serves not in the
corner. 2-0 down, any hopes of a Jan
comeback were scuppered, when a
hamstring went early in the third.
Rick was up against Jon, who in the
first half fixture, surprised
everyone with his unusual style,
non-stop running & ability to
produce winners from nowhere. But
here his timing was astray as Rick
easily took the first 2 games 9-1,
with an array of cracking drives,
and delightfully soft backhand
drops.
Did we see Rick pull up with a
twinge in the back….maybe….maybe not
?
The 3rd was a different
story as Jon got going and running.
Rick was under pressure at every
stage. Jon crept ahead but he does
tin a very high percentage. At 7 all
Rick was holding his back …we hadn’t
just imagined it…but at 8 all Jon
tinned 1 too many and Rick played a
trademark winner. Game over. But not
just Jon was left thinking……….’what
if …‘
Phil has been very solid of late and
started steadily if unspectacularly,
against Pat who was using all her
women’s team experience. However
after taking a close 10-8 first
game, Phil grew in confidence to
expand his repertoire with Pat
fading, as he dominated the next 2
games 9-3 9-0. On this form Phil
would’ve given their no. 2 a run for
his money.
Finally Charlie was up against Ian.
What happened to the script? as Ian
cracked the ball all round the
court, and recently in-form Charlie
couldn’t find his timing. Despite a
number of changes of handouts,
Charlie couldn’t get off the mark,
and Ian raced to a 8-0 lead. Cue
another sort of script as Charlie
got back into it, and, well, you
give him a sniff at your peril……..as
did Ian, who under pressure tinned
a good few, and Charlie snatched it
10-8 !
This however didn’t herald a
collapse and although Charlie went
6-2 up, Ian came back strongly with
more drives and cross-courts, to
edge the second 9-7.Charlie came
back in the third, continuing to
take the pace off the ball,
combined with some super returns of
serve, taking that easily, and
going into a strong lead in the
fourth. Ian rallied to 7 all, but
Charlie upped the pace to close out
3-1.
In summary, the Millers’ recent good
form continued, and Glossop were put
in their place, by a comprehensive
defeat.
Thanks to our guest writer for the
last two reports - much appreciated
New Mills 19 Village
Hyde IV 05
As
comfortable a win as the score would
suggest.
Both courts
were available so a shorter than
usual evening with spectators
switching across the balcony to see
the 2 matches.
Phil was at
his best, playing powerful lengths
with some smart drops. Much too good
for his plucky opponent, taking the
first 2 sets easily and a little
casual in the third, pushing the
ball around, but overall very sharp
at 3-0.
Dave was the
surprise of the evening – losing
3-2.
But the
scoreline is deceptive. Dave took
the first easily 9-2 against Scott,
who plays in a unique style, no
backhand but forehand from both
hands, switching his racquet.
Untroubled in the first, Dave let
Scott’s style unnerve him in the
second and his game fell away. The
third saw Dave back into it, easily
winning 9-2 again. Scott came back
and took the fourth in a repeat of
the second. What would the fifth
bring ?
Lots of
mistakes but at 8-5 to Dave, Scott
in his own words, had almost given
up. But not quite, and in an
error-strewn finish, Dave missed 6
chances to close out the match and
fell 10-9. A strange pattern to a
match Dave should have won, perhaps
some overconfidence from his
outstanding season.
Jan took on
youngster Dan, who’s had some good
wins recently, which showed as he
took the first 2 games easily with
some cracking forehands mixed with
drops & boasts from the rear court.
Jan was out of sorts, not helped by
a couple of contentious marker
calls, but it was clear she had the
class to win if she could
concentrate. Eventually she heeded
the advice to play more drops, and
took the third as Dan continued to
stand too far back. Dan was also
getting caught too often out of
position and Jan realised she had to
call for many lets & strokes rather
then try to play round the youngster
as sportingly, she was doing
earlier. The fifth was close as Jan
reverted to playing the ball back to
Dan who raised his game, but not
enough as Jan closed out helped by
some trademark winning serves.
Charlie
played Naj- Dan’s dad, who
unfortunately pulled a groin in the
very first point. This made it
fairly routine for Charlie who
pushed the ball around to Dan who
had to rely on outright winners, so
there were few rallies. Charlie had
a very comfortable 3-0.
Rick played
possibly his best squash of the
season, mixing cracking forehands
with delicate backhand drops. There
were plenty of rallies but Rick had
the class, if not the stamina. He
was puffing a bit towards the end,
but that doesn’t matter if you take
the first three, as did Rick !
All in all
another very solid win
Grove Park 5 New Mills 20 - Millers
stroll in at the Grove
It was somewhat
of a cake walk as New Mills won
comfortably at bottom club Grove
Park but not without incident. Phil
Wheatcroft won a tricky encounter
with the lovely Kate Oldale, the
lass with the beaming smile. Phil
started well but Kate gave him a
scare along the way with some
powerful rallies but lacked the
killer punch enabling her more
experienced opponent to take
advantage in the longer rallies.
Although Kate deservedly took the
third game Phil finished in style to
win 3-1.
Dave Cartwright standing proudly at
the top of the league rankings came
up against Neil Afflick who was way
down at number 84. For some reason
Dave has hit a lull in the high
standard of play he has set himself
this season and luckily for him his
opponent faded badly at the end of
this disjointed 3-2 win for the New
Mills man. A win is a win but Dave
will want to put this one behind him
as quickly as possible. I had no
trouble beating my old mate Jim
Farrington with a flurry of winning
shots that mostly hit the mark in a
return to form that certainly lifted
my spirits after some pretty poor
performances of late.
Following this game Charlie Bishop
gave us all an exhibition of what
the Bish is all about in the game of
the night. In a closely fought start
to the match Alan Rowat edged the
first two games by the odd point
but, Charlie came back with a 9-1
win. Alan again gathered himself and
serving for the match in the fourth
game at 8-4 looked to have Charlie's
scalp in the bag. We know Charlie
has been in this position before so
braced ourselves for the comeback.
Surviving another five match balls
saw Charlie draw level at 8-8 with
some typical Bishop style rallies
including a couple of Bjorn Borg
type diving winners thrown in.
Nudging into a 9-8 lead it took
Charlie three game balls before he
secured the game with a neat drop
into the front right hand corner to
level the match. The Bish was back
and we all knew Alan was a beaten
man and indeed Charlie cruised to a
9-6 win and the match to cap an
unforgettable performance.
The final paining brought together
Jan Butler with Steve "The Greek"
Lloyd, the much travelled ex New
Mills player. Poor old Steve didn't
know what hit him when Jan decided
she needed to finish the game
quickly and get home at a reasonable
hour for her early 6:30 start in the
morning. Jan played like a woman
possessed and with uncanny accuracy
lobbed and dropped her way to a 3-0
win dropping only one point. On
another night this fine win would
have been the highlight but
Charlie's performance slightly
overshadowed it but still a fine win
for Jan which ever way you wish to
look at it.
New Mills 15 West Heaton II 08
A win for the Millers
A thoroughly
enjoyable evenings squash against
West Heaton saw New Mills return to
winning ways. Ian Johnson restored
to the team after a long break
needed to be at his best to beat the
rising talent of young Phil Kemp, a
14 year old with a very bright
future on tonight's evidence. As Ian
tired in the third game the young
boy put him under great pressure but
Ian's experience saw him through
without loss. Phil Wheatcroft put in
one of his classic performances
against Diane Wilson looking well in
control one minute and all at sea
the next. After a comfortable first
game win Phil lost concentration and
slipped to 2-1 down with a
succession of errors. In the fourth
game he upped the ante after Diane
threatened to win 3-1. Slowly but
surely Phil pulled his game together
and after taking the fourth went on
to win without conceding another
point. After Jan Butler lost to a
very strong Peter Robertson the game
looked to be slipping from New
Mills. Jan put up a decent effort
but was beaten by a stronger player
on the night. Next on was Charlie
Bishop to face Nigel Geddis the West
Heaton Captain. This looked to be a
possible match decider and so it
turned out as Charlie turned on one
of his sharpest displays of the
season to beat the plucky Nigel 3-0.
Charlie hit some great winners which
left his opponent with little chance
of levelling the match and
deservedly won the match for his
team. With Geoff Hurst the West
Heaton number one only losing two
games this season, Rick Aldred was
going to have to play out of his
skin to get a result. It was a fine
attempt by our regular number two
but Geoff's superior fitness turned
out to be the difference in the two
players. Rick certainly made the
West Heaton man work hard for his
points and took the third game in
fine style to earn his team a
valuable point.
So a good all round showing by the
team against one of friendliest
squads in the division.
No game next week so it's Grove Park
10 next in a fortnight although we
will probably have a knock between
ourselves next week.
Marple III 17 New Mills 09
Back on song
An exciting match
at Marple tonight with the team
doing decidedly better than in
recent games. Phil Wheatcroft opened
with his best performance of the
season beating the popular Eric
Collins 3-1. A very confident
looking Phil played the Marple
veteran perfectly by competing with
Eric in the rallies and taking the
opportunities to play winners when
they arose. This was only the third
defeat Eric has tasted this season
which illustrates the level of
Phil's win. Jan Butler was next on
to face Chris Pottage who again has
a great record in this division
losing only once. Jan started off
slowly as her razor sharp opponent
took control. After losing the first
though Jan fought back narrowly
missing the second game and after
some exquisite drop shots got back
into it by easily taking the third.
A close fourth game could have gone
either way but Jan was on the end of
a couple of unfortunate decisions
which inevitably distracted her at
an crucial stage which allowed Chris
to close out the match at 3-1. A
very tidy effort though for Jan who
always puts in a solid show. My own
game against Paul Vincent was a one
sided game in what I can only
describe as a disappointing show on
my part. I appreciate that Paul has
only lost twice this season but I
was not able to put him under any
pressure whatsoever and that is
unacceptable in my view at this
level. Outstanding performance of
the night and probably our season
was Dave Cartwright's win at number
one against Gary Carrington. Gary is
unable to play all the matches but
is a very competent team player and
plays a similar game to David
relying on fitness and agility round
the court. With David not feeling
too well on the day it looked like a
defeat was on the cards but Dave
lived up to his high ranking
position in this division by winning
a very exciting game on the last
point, after both players had served
for the match a couple of times.
This left Rick with the chance to
decide the match in the last rubber
against Rob Stanbridge a
regular 2nd team player for Marple.
Rob took the first game 9-6 after
Rick had squandered three bad
returns at 6-6 but came back with a
vengeance in the second winning 9-0.
Rob had no answer to Ricks quality
drop shots and it looked like a win
as a dejected Marple lad shaped up
for the third. It was not to be
though as Rob came back strongly
with a classic reversal to leave
Rick shell shocked as he cruised to
a 9-0 of his own. How strange that
Rick should again hit top gear to
win the fourth 9-2 and look
favourite to take the decider. After
a cagy start Rob again turned on the
power and his slight fitness
advantage led him to a 9-2 win and
the match. A fine attempt from Rick
who is improving all the time but
desperately needs more than a game a
week if he wants to win these games.
So a decent night for most of the
team and hopefully a chance for me
to take stock of my own game as
Charlie returns to face
West Heaton in a fortnights time. No
game next week as it's the National
Championships at Sports City.
Hopefully we#ll have the courts for
a club night next week and I like Rick need match
practice and if I can regain some
sort form may decide to squeeze one
more season out of the tired old legs,
otherwise it's the knackers yard....
New Mills 00 Hyde CC III 20
Millers take a Hydeing
After last weeks
pasting at Poynton the team
regrouped for another stiff test at
home to the second placed Hyde
Cricket Club. It ended with our
heaviest defeat of the season,
failing to win a single game. I
think to be fait to the team we all
lost to players of a higher ability.
Dave Cartwright had the hardest task
against Hyde's number one Andy Berry
who hasn't dropped a single game in
this division. Dave made Andy work
hard and at times had the Hyde man
stretching himself to keep the home
player at bay but inevitably kept
his record intact. As for Rick, Jan,
myself and Phil, we all gave it a go
but were unable to gain a foothold
in any of the games.
So we had to swallow our pride and
hand it to what for me was a defeat
to the best team in the division.
Next week I think we may have to put
the same team out for another tough
game at neighbours Marple.
Poynton 20 New Mills 2
Rare defeat at Poynton
It was sweet
revenge for Poynton tonight as New
Mills slipped to a heavy defeat at a
club which normally is a happy
hunting ground for them. Without
going into too much detail, no one
came away from this encounter with
much to remember other than a
spirited contribution from Charlie
Bishop who was literally playing on
one leg after last weeks injury. He
pushed Dave Armstrong all the way
and nearly turned the game in the
third when he had two game balls.
Jan Butler and myself did manage a
couple of game wins between us but
they were hardly anything to write
home about. Without wishing to take
anything from the opposition who all
played extremely well, I think the
courts were the main factor in our
complete inability to make a fist of
this match. The home team drove the
ball with pace to the back corners
with alarming regularity, dictating
the pace and picking out their
winners with ease. So we will have
to concede to a better team on the
night and live to fight another day.
Next week it's Hyde CC 3 at home and
another chance for Dave Cartwright
to play Andy Berry who has only
dropped one game this season in all
his matches.
New Mills 04 Village Hyde III
19 - Hyde too strong
Hyde proved
again that they are worthy league
leaders with a strong line up at the
Leisure Centre tonight. I was
apprehensive when I saw my opponent
was Dave Grant the 62 year old Irish
lad who is an incredibly difficult
player to beat. Starting off well
turned out to be a red herring as
Dave destroyed me with a series of
accurate drop shots that I could not
cope with. My own performance was
pretty dire but I had to hold my
hands up to a far superior player on
the night. Jan Butler was drawn
against Martin Wyatt who Dave
dispatched in the first half of the
season. In fairness Jan was affected
with breathing difficulties and on
another night the result could have
been different. A good effort by Jan
who missed a great chance to win the
third game missing a high volley
when it seemed easier to dispatch
it. Rick chose tonight for one of
his more forgettable games as he was
edged out by the hard hitting Scott
Winston who has improved greatly
since the first half. Rick was in
with a shout for the first game but
too many unforced errors were his
downfall. Rick will be back though
make no mistake. Charlie Bishop
looked to have the measure of
unbeaten Lee Rawsthorne until he
injued his leg in a nasty looking
fall during the second game. Charlie
had deservedly won the first game in
his usual non stop style but in
going for another lost cause he
ended up in a heap and had to
concede defeat although he played to
the bitter end through the pain.
Let's hope he recovers in time for
next week. Highlight of the night
was Dave Cartwright's epic clash
with Alan Addison the very
experienced Hyde number one. Again a
very hard hitting opponent with
plenty of winning shots was worn
down by Dave's ability to read and
chase down most of his opponents
shots. The improvement in Dave's
play is there to see every week and
his reward for tonight's victory was
top spot in the NWCSL Div 5 SE
rankings list. This is no mean feat
and he joins Jan Butler, Malc Balls
and Paul Hughes - previous New Mills
players to reach this milestone.
Dave simply would not allow Alan to
boss the court and in a five set
thriller was a deserved winner
sportingly acknowledged by his
opponent.
A little disappointed that we were
unable to threaten the league
leaders but they knew they had had a
match all right. The evening ended
with both teams enjoying an
excellent meal prepared by Jan and
plenty of banter to boot.
Next week it's Poynton away in a
match that we need to win to keep
our fourth spot in the table.
Grove Park VIII 08 New Mills
18 - Off to a flyer
The second
half of the season got under way
much as the first half did in
September with a win against Grove
Park, this time on their courts.
After a number of withdrawals Phil
Wheatcroft was good enough to turn
out at late notice and a great job
he made of it too. In his first game
for the team in nearly two years
Phil always had the edge on Alan
McDonald Grove's number five. After
a nervy start Phil slipped into the
old routine and kept the ball in
court with some very smooth match
play and after going a game down,
comfortably took the next three. I
was next to enter the fray at four
against Chas Hughes. The festive
season had clearly made it's mark on
Chas and myself but, Chas was always
a shot ahead of me controlling the
front of the court with a flurry of
neat cross court shots that found me
wanting. Although I managed to level
the games at 1-1 Chas was never in
danger of letting this one slip
running out a 3-1 winner. Jan
Butler's game (pictured below)
against the very experienced Graham
Gilbert was easily the game of the
match. It started at a gentle pace
with Jan moving her older opponent
round the court with great success
to take the first game. Then as
Graham got more into Jan's style he
moved quicker to ball taking shots
early and playing some very tight
winners. This pegged Jan back as she
lost the next two games and had to
up her game somewhat to draw level
mainly through playing Graham to the
back of the court and dropping the
ball with great accuracy into the
front corners. This set up a
thrilling decider which looked to be
going Grahams way at 6-3 but Jan
again unleashed a flurry of superb
winners to move into a 7-6 lead. At
this point Graham lost his
concentration after disputing a
decision, made quite correctly by
the marker and confirmed by the
gallery. In the blink of an eye Jan
picked up the next two points and
that was that!! Graham apologised
soon after the game had ended for
his spat which was a reflection of
the sporting manner this game was
played in. Rick Aldred's game was a
bit of a mis match at number two
with Mike Bradford only picking up 5
points in a 3-0 defeat. Rick as
usual played his full array of
winning shots but will find next
weeks opponents a much more testing
experience. Finally Dave Cartwright
made no mistakes at number one when
his latest victim, John Holt, found
his speed around the court too hot
to handle. Dave played as well as he
had to without ever getting into top
gear and like Rick will have to work
a lot harder next week when League
leaders Village Hyde come to New
Mills. We will have a stronger
team out for this return fixture and
I'm looking to cause a shock against
a team that have only lost one game
so far this season.
So all round a good night for New
Mills Squash Club and yet again a
very pleasant evenings sport played
in good company.

First Half 2007-2008 Match Reports
New Mills 17 Marple IV 08
Best of the rest
With our only 5
available players we ground out a
win against local neighbours Marple
IV. As usual there were a couple of
regular old faces at the Leisure
Centre mixed in with a few younger
ones for a change. I was first on
court to play Guy Crebbin who was in
his first season and, I'm afraid it
showed. Guy tried hard but was never
going to me make get out of first gear
so an easy 3-0 win was the result.
Charlie Bishop turned up with a
seriously bad cold to face Gordon
Staines another first year rookie.
Charlie's medical state meant that
Gordon would always be in with a
shout to win his first team game. As
usual Charlie got stuck in when it
mattered most and in spite of his
handicap mopped up the points with a
good 3-1 win. His loss of voice
meant that his traditional high
spirited vocal appeals for lets and
points were muted to say the least
but this was possibly the match
winning performance as Jan Butler
struggled on the next court to
contain the experienced Anton Kleban.
Anton plays a very similar game to
Jan although to be fair Jan was
clearly fatigued from her new job
back in teaching. On another week I
would expect Jan to win against
Anton but in fairness he kept Jan
moving around the court and played
some excellent lengths to the back
of the court in his 3-1 win. This
just wasn't Jan's night it was as
easy as that. Rick Aldred also
came up against a player, Ian
Dickson, who over the years
hasn't changed his style which
relies on speed around the court and
overall fitness. Rick won the first
game with another exhibition of his
fine array of winning shots but it
soon became obvious that he was
struggling to cope with Ian's
ability to get to almost every shot.
Frustration and lack of fitness
encouraged many unforced errors to
appear and by the fourth game there
was only going to be one winner and
it wasn't Rick. So the final
encounter was the battle of the
number ones when Dave Cartwright
went up against and beat Jonathan
Crebbin another up and comer, 3-1.
Dave is putting his marker down in
this division with his own style
much like Malc Balls did a couple of
seasons back. Dave has developed his
game to a fine art now playing with
a calmness that many other players
never attain. Nothing flashy, no
particular winning shots but the
ability to wear down his opponent by
doing the simple things well. We
obviously miss having Malc in the
team but Dave has made a great
replacement and is up there with the
top five players in the rankings
having lost only two of his nine
matches. All round a decent win
which puts us in a good position in
finishing the first half of the
season in fourth place. Next week
it's a club night with a Chinese to
follow and a good chance for us all
to get together and discuss tactics
for the second half of the season
which kicks off at Grove Park on the
10th of January 2008
Hyde CC IV 15 New Mills
07
Another defeat with
the bottom half of the team not
strong enough although yet again new
Mills found them selves playing
against a team who were bolstered by
players from a higher team without a
game. Not that this is a big problem
because we have no ambitions to push
for promotion this time. Tony Gaeta
was first on at the Cricket Club at
number 4 to face the hard hitting
Peter Davies who was extremely quick
around the court, Tony did very well
in the first game pegging back
Peter's healthy lead and going on to
take the game. However, the effort
proved to be a handicap for the
Italian Stallion who was left
gasping as peter took the next three
games conceding only 4 points in the
process. Jonathan Wakefield made a
welcome debut for New Mills at
number five although this was
possibly a bad choice of games to do
so giving the strength of the
opposition. A combination of nerves
and unforced errors proved to be his
undoing as Dave Lloyd Jones cruised
to a 3-0 win. Jonathan will continue
to improve and in my opinion will
prove to be a regular winner next
season with his fitness and
enthusiasm being ideal for team
squash. My own performance at number
three left me totally underwhelmed
against Hyde's usual number one
Nigel Howes, a player I have
competed well with in recent
seasons. As a late replacement for
the injured Ian Johnson I started
quite well but managed to surrender
a 5-0 lead in the first game from
which point I never recovered losing
to the stronger player 3-0. Just
like last week Rick Aldred at number
two lifted the mood with a fine 3-0
win against the wily old campaigner
Bill Ward better known as "the
glove" Rick wasn't quite
as sharp as last week but Bill is a
great competitor who always had his
opponent under pressure. Rick has
all these soft drop shots in his
armour and in the end this proved to
be the main difference to two well
matched opponents with Rick winning
3-0. Dave Cartwright back from a
bout of flu had set himself for a
contest with Katy Cummins, again a
regular third team player who has
only dropped 4 games in eight
matches this season. However Katy
was a no show so Hyde slipped in
another third teamer, Ron Williamson
who had an identical record to Katy
in the higher team. Again this was a
very well balanced pairing who
fought well for every point. Dave is
proving to be one of the top players
in this division and yet again he
pulled out all the stops to beat Ron
3-1 after going a game down. Another
fine evenings sport with a good
bunch of lads at the Cricket Club.
Next week it's our final game before
the Christmas break at home to
neighbours Marple IV. We need to
sign off with a thumping win to
prepare us for the second half.
New Mills 09 Glossop II
14
With Dave
Cartwright crying off with flu it
left a rather depleted squad to face
local rivals Glossop. New Mills
couldn't have made a worse start
with both myself at 4 and Ian
Johnson at 3 both losing in a
similar manner. Although facing
strong players in Ian Fairweather
and John Clarke respectively we both
chose to play too many cross court
shots and both failed to take
chances where available. Although I
picked up a game it wasn't the kind
of performance you need at the
bottom end of the team. Tony Gaeta
had the misfortune to play at 5
where Glossop failed to provide a
player so although the three points
were gratefully accepted he would
have preferred to play for them.
Rick stopped the rot with a
demolition job on the shell shocked
Paul Lee who had no answer to Ricks
non stop barrage of winners. A 3-0
win will do Rick's confidence the
world of good. Charlie Bishop again
gave us an exhibition of pure guts
and determination after going two
down to a very lively Simon
Turnbull at number 1. You can always bank on
Charlie to pull off the unexpected and
tonight looked like yet another one
was on the cards. Simon looked
totally beaten when Charlie drew
level dropping only three points in
the process. We
were set for the deciding game with
the match as a prize to the winner.
Simon duly pulled himself together
and with a younger, fitter and
somewhat lighter frame ground out
the final game to take the rubber
and the match 3-2. it was
interesting that we were level in
game points at 9-9 but of course
Glossop took the 5 extra bonus
points with the extra win. A good
nights squash and a very nice
Chinese Supper with an
extremely
sociable bunch of lads from over the hills.
Next week it's up on top of Werneth
Low for our match with Hyde Cricket
Club when Jonathan Wakefield will
make his New Mills debut, a tough
start but well within his
capabilities.
Village Hyde IV 03 New
Mills 18
On a cold
November night New Mills enjoyed an
emphatic win against a quite strong
Village Hyde side that contained two
players who played against them for
the third team earlier in the
season. I was first on court to play
Danvaal Majid a young player on his
way up at number five. I was not
feeling well when the game started
but thanks to Danvaal's inexperience
managed to take a 2-0 lead without
too much effort, however, at that
point I was feeling decidedly ill
and felt that whatever the out come
of the third game I would call it a
night at the end of it. Danvaal led
for most of of it but somehow
managed to lose it with a run of
unforced errors to give me an
unexpected 3-0 win. Next on was Dave
Cartwright at number one who played
Scott Winston a regular in the third
team and unbeaten before this game.
Scott has a very unusual style which
involves changing his racquet from
hand to hand, into the side the ball
is played to. Dave found this
confusing at first but remembered
from the game played earlier in the
season and changed his game
accordingly. Scott was never in with
a shout after Dave introduced his
short game and moved his stocky
opponent round the court to great
effect. A 3-0 win was inevitable
putting the New Mills side in a
great position. Charlie Bishop at
number two was next on against the
wiley old Dave Grant. Dave has the
ability to play drop shots from
almost anywhere on the court and
Charlie had great difficulty in
reading them. As we all know though
Charlie doesn't give up easily and
he grafted his socks off to take the
first game. We all knew he would
have to keep things very tight if
further success was to occur. Dave
had other ideas though. The old chap
just didn't get ruffled and it soon
became apparent that Charlie was on
a sticky wicket. This proved to be
the case and Dave continued his
master class to win the next three
games without reply and certainly
for me looked their best player by a
country mile. So Jan was next in the
firing line at number three against
Ray Malik the regular number one for
this team. Ray had beaten Tony Gaeta
3-0 earlier in the season for the
third team so Jan was quite aware
that this was going to be a stiff
challenge. Ray helped Jan get in the
mood when he announced that he'd
never lost to a woman - red rag to a
bull I thought. Jan had clearly set
her sights well and played as well
as I have seen for a couple of
seasons and competed in great style.
He lobs to the back were clearly
frustrating the hard hitting Ray and
when she combined that with some
very tight drop shots it swung
the match in her favour. A 3-0 win
was just reward for a fine show by
Jan and left Rick with a dead rubber
at number four with the match
already won. Rick didn't disappoint
as he tore into Michael Callaghan as
if he had a point to prove. Last
years number two has a great range
of shots and if his opponent doesn't
apply enough pressure he will take
full advantage. Michael was shell
shocked as Rick played winners from
all over the court to take the first
game without dropping a point.
Although Michael turned up the ante
in the next two games he still
wasn't good enough to take anything
more than a few points out of a game
Rick was never going to lose.
A good all round show from a quite
strong New Mills team who are going
to have a much tougher challenge
next week against local rivals
Glossop.
West Heaton brushed aside - West
Heaton 2 New Mills 20
25-10-2007
Ian Johnson was
the first on court tonight to play
Josh Chipperfield who made his team
debut for West Heaton. Josh is
clearly one for the future and Ian
had to be at his sharpest to keep
the young man in check and
thankfully he was up to the task.
Ian on his day is a quality player
and Josh had no answer to the
variety of shots Ian has in his
armour. So with Ian winning 3-0 it
left me to keep the momentum going
in my 5th string game against Dave
Bates. After an early scare I got
into my game and took an early 2-0
lead but in the reverse of last week
I suddenly found myself being pegged
back. Dave was finding winners from
every where on the court no matter
how tight my shots were. I lost the
next two games for only 3 points so
it looked ominous as we started the
deciding game. Perhaps it was my
experience but suddenly Dave's
winners turned to errors and I was
very relieved to take my first win
of the season. Dave Cartwright was
always too good for my old mate
Nigel Geddis. Nigel as ever gave it
his best shot but Dave in fairness
coasted to an easy 3-0 win. Jan
Butler then had an equally
comfortable win at number 3 against
Carolyn Trembath who clearly had one
eye on her holiday the next day.
Carolyn had no answer to Jan's
excellent lobs to the back of the
court leaving Jan to mop up with a
3-0 win. It was good to see Rick
Aldred take his first win of the
season too with a well fought out
3-0 victory against Malcolm Oswald.
Malcolm was similar in style to our
own Malcolm Balls (now stuck in
purgatory at the Moorside) but not
quite as proficient as the Hayfield
lad. Some of Rick's boasts and drops
were superb and he thoroughly
deserved his success. So overall a
very satisfying night's squash and a
quite excellent supper provided by
our hosts who are one of the
friendliest teams in the league.
Next week see's the return of
Charlie and The Italian Stallion in
an encounter with Grove Park 10
Much to admire in defeat - New
Mills 5 Marple III 20
18-10-2007
Rarely can the
team have put in so much effort for
so little reward as they did tonight
at the Leisure Centre. I played
probably my best match for two
seasons against former team mate
Eric Collins and still failed to
notch my first win. Eric now in his
68th year is a formidable opponent
who normally plays higher up the
order and at present stands 4th in
the rankings a clear 64 places above
me. We had a rare old battle of the
oldies as we both gave it our best.
Eric with his tidy no fuss style
took the first two games and looked
a likely winner but, for once I
found that extra yard that has been
missing from my game this season and
dragged myself back into it drawing
level at 2-2. The deciding game was
a real struggle to both of us as
only other over 60's players will
appreciate. The brain is always
willing but the body tends to over
rule it as you make that final push.
In the end Eric's utter refusal to
give in won the day as he took the
winning point in an 70 minute
grueller. Jan as ever gave a
spirited performance against the
much improved Paul Vincent, a player
that Jan has struggled against in
the past. Losing the second game
after calling set one was a
shame because I think she at least
deserved a point for this game
alone. Rick Aldred made his long
awaited first appearance this season
but sadly lacked the fitness to beat
Chris Pottage at 3. Losing the first
game to Chris, Rick slipped nicely
into gear with some well executed
soft drop shot winners and took an
8-1 lead in the second. Things were
looking good but I'm afraid that was
as good as it got as Rick hit the
buffers with a vengeance. Chris soon
spotted Rick was struggling and
stepped up the pace to claw back the
deficit and take that game and the
following one to win 3-0. Rick will
be much improved when he gets a few
games under his belt hopefully
starting next week. Charlie Bishop
can always be relied on to give just
that bit more than 100% whoever he
faces. Tonight Rob Stanbridge looked
a tough opponent as he cruised to a
9-3 first game lead. Cue Charlie to
turn on the afterburner and run his
opponent ragged. he chased every
lost cause and won most of them,
when he didn't he screamed at the
marker in frustration. He narrowly
missed winning the second game but
gave Rob a wake up call with a fine
third game which he took 9-2. Rob
slowed the game down in the fourth
and took every opportunity to break
Charlie's rhythm which he managed to
do and eventually ran out a 3-1
winner. So it was down to Dave
Cartwright at number one to rescue
some points against the popular
Elliot Browne. Elliot has been
around for a long time and is a very
accomplished squash player which I
think intimidated Dave in the early
exchanges. Dave soon found himself
2-0 down and needed to rethink his
strategy. This was a comparatively
easy exorcise as it was quite plain
that Elliot was tiring fast so Dave
sensibly made him do the running by
keeping the ball in play and
dropping the ball when Elliot was
behind the tee. At 2-2 it looked
like Dave was going to take a major
scalp but the game was going to go
to the last point as they reached
8-8. With Dave serving it looked
good until a lack of concentration
saw him serve the ball out. Elliot
took advantage and grabbed the lead
only for Dave to level it again at
9-9. Both players were now on their
last legs but Elliot's experience
paid off as he took the winning
point and probably, just about
deserved the win. Dave is certainly
making his mark this season and is a
worthy number one in our team. So it
ended a really good night of squash
with a very friendly bunch of lads
who all enjoyed a few beers and a
Chinese in the plush surroundings of
the New Mills bar.
Next week it's West Heaton II away
and another toughie.
A good Hyding at the
Cricket club -
Hyde CC III 20 New Mills
01 11-10-2007
After last week’s fine performance,
we were up against a strong team on
Werneth Low. The court was hot and
the local lads knew their way round
it far too well. First on against
the wily Ron Williamson, Ian took
the first three points before Ron
turned up the heat and took 18
points in a row with accurate
lengths and soft boasts. Ron played
excellent squash, leaving Ian only a
few scraps in the third game, but
then taking the initiative again,
slowing the game and walking out an
easy winner. Tony played his best
game of the season on the opener
against Geoff Hubin taking what was
to be the only point of the night.
After that, Geoff tightened up his
game, playing low hard crosscourts
and stretching Tony on both sides.
Despite a spirited effort, Tony
could not regain his earlier form,
and struggled for points in a 3-1
defeat. Jan was the only player who
found the courts too cold, but
looking very pink after a hard
fought and pretty even game, had to
admit that Brian Hadfield was too
strong for her on the night. Maybe
on our ‘warmer’ courts after
Christmas? Meanwhile, Charlie was
having another heated battle against
Harvey Purcer, who sounded very
unfit but when he reached the ball,
his shots were accurate and probing.
Charlie looked the better player in
terms of court play and fitness
(relatively speaking!), but Harvey’s
experience and court knowledge was
enough to edge Charlie out in a
thrilling 3 setter. So up to our
unbeaten Dave to take on the
formidable Andy Berry who looks
every bit the squash player. Indeed,
Dave put up another fine show, and
his game has improved immensely this
year. Not content with retrieving,
Dave has found some additional power
shots that gives him a new attacking
edge. If he can combine this with
winning shots when the few chances
arrive, he will be a force to reckon
with. On the night, he was just
edged out by Andy, who is also
unbeaten, and who also played in the
2nd and 3rd divisions last year.
Despite the thrashing, the Hyde lads
are a great bunch and the enjoyable
(and early) night was rounded off
with a fine curry (thanks, Ron).
Poynton
in the right direction! New
Mills 20 Poynton 04
Ian was the first on at 4 against
the experienced Nigel Watkin. Nigel
is a big lad, but makes up for his
lack of speed round the court with
powerful volleys and accurate drops.
Ian took the first game with a
series of unorthodox shots, but
Nigel came back in the second,
having noticed Ian’s lack of speed
off the mark to reach his drops..
The second two games were very
evenly matched with Ian trying to
out position Nigel by varying his
game; the fourth could have gone
either way, but Ian ground out a
10-9 win to take a hard fought
match. Jan returned for her first
game of the season at 3, despite
having played Wheaty already, she
looked fresh as a daisy and was far
too good for Neil Healey, who took
some time to switch on the power and
take the third game. By then, his
energy was sapped, and Jan’s
relentless lobs and drops proved too
much for him. Welcome back Jan. Tony
faced an experienced campaigner in
Dave Armstrong - Dave has put on a
bit of weight recently and, although
he played some fine shots, he made
many mistakes at crucial points. In
the second game, leading 7-0, he let
Tony creep back in slowly, and even
with a number of service exchanges,
could not close out the game. That
gave Tony the confidence to raise
his game and take the third to win.
Despite a good performance, Tony
will realise that he could have
played better - exchanging some
unusually complicated shots when a
simple rally would have made him an
easier winner. After, Dave explained
that he had been learning a new
shot, which didn’t work in the
game….. Charlie at 2 had to take on
the wily Gary Bingham, a seasoned
campaigner and renowned grouch. With
similar running games, there was a
lot of obstruction which led to
heated exchanges. Both players put
in a lot of effort until 7-7 in the
third game, when Charlie suddenly
found his accuracy, after mcuh loose
and hectic play. In the fourth game,
despite increased anymosity from
Gary, Charlie’s drop shots became
tighter and tighter such that Gary
was no longer able to appeal for
obstruction and Charlie ran out a
9-1 winner in the fourth. Last on
was David at 1, up against last
year’s league winner, Bryan Ansty.
The players looked extremely well
matched, both with somewhat
unorthodox styles, but David’s
relentless retrieval put too much
pressure on Bryan who had to concede
another loss. Despite running out of
lager for the post match
celebrations, a good evening with
our local mates, and we look forward
to the return after Christmas.
Village Hyde 19 New Mills
06 Thursday 27th
Sept 2007
In spite of Dave
Cartwright's great performance at
number one, deservedly beating
Hyde's Martin Whyatt 3-2, last years
failing at the bottom end of the
team reappeared. Charlie Bishop
almost made it two wins, losing in
the fifth game to a very experienced
Martin Green. Myself and Tony Gaeta
never looked like getting a result
against stronger opponents. Ian
Johnson gave a spirited effort
against Scott Winton at number four
in a very evenly contested pairing.
Ian is looking quite strong this
season and hopefully will move up
the team as his fitness returns. So
Dave Cartwright's win has catapulted
him to the top of the NWCL rankings
and at the moment looks a good bet
to stay there.
Next week it's home to Poynton with
Jan Butler taking my position at
number three as I take a much needed
holiday.
NEW MILLS 19 Grove Park 05
Thursday 4th October 2007
The Squash
Club opened the new season in style
as they cruised to a 4-1 win against
Grove Parks eighth team. With
Malcolm Balls now playing for
Moorside and no sign of regular
number two Rick Aldred it was going
to be a challenge to see if the old
guard would indeed be good enough
for the season ahead. Tony Gaeta
swept aside the popular Ray
Farrington in a storming performance
dropping only two points. When Ian
Johnson won a thriller against Mike
Bradford coming back from a game
down twice to win the deciding
rubber for a 3-2 victory New Mills
only needed one more match win to
guarantee a winning start to the
season. As I battled away with a
much fitter and more agile Marc
Allen it could have gone either way.
Marc took the fifth game to just
about shade it but my disappointment
disappeared as I came off court to
see Charlie win his game in a tighty
fought contest to take the match and
relieve our new number one of
any pressure. A very relaxed Dave
Cartwright never looked like losing
to the hard hitting John Ashington
the former Manchester Police player.
It's good to see our top end of the
team is still in good hands.
Next week it's a trip to the Village
Hyde to play their third team and a
chance to see if we are likely to be
up there with the front runners.
The Swizzles Matlow Tournament 2006
Thursday 18th & 25th May 2006 : The handicapping was interesting
tonight and brought us some very close games. It definitely
doesn't suit all the players to play under the American
scoring system with all points counting. The big surprise of
the night was Steve Hollick's failure to win a single game.
Steve and Jan Butler suffered more than most as they both
struggled to make their mark. Jan played quite well and
possibly deserved a little more than her single point in a
drawn game with Aiden O'Sullivan. One player who certainly
did enjoy his return to the leisure centre was Matt Done who
went through his league unbeaten to make next weeks semi
final. His opponent will be Malc Balls who had to battle
extremely hard to overcome his handicap of -8 points. Last
years winner, Dave Cartwright played some very good squash
to qualify for the second Semi Final and will play myself.
Tony Gaeta was looking set to challenge until his problem
posterior muscle kicked in. Leading Charlie Bishop 14-3 and
needing just one point he couldn't do anything as Charlie
upped the ante and picked him off. At 14-14 Tony made one
last push and stretched Charlie to the limit before driving
the ball into the tin when a winning shot looked on the
cards. Tough on Tony who really is starting to look the
part. Charlie had an up and down night, never looking
completely at ease with the scoring system. Aiden O'Sullivan
also had mixed fortunes drawing all his games with the point
against Malc Balls his best performance.
The Tournament reached it's conclusion tonight after two
hard fought semi finals. I met my match tonight when Dave
Cartwright clinched a best of three match with the deciding
set. After winning the first game my legs decided they were
not up to the expected standard and Dave deservedly took the
match with some very sharp play. Meanwhile on the other
court Malc Balls was fighting a losing battle against matt
Done who played some excellent percentage shots to keep Malc
at bay. As hard as Malc tried the handicap was just that bit
too much for him to overcome and Matt moved into the final
2-0.
So
it was last years winner against Matt. Dave fell into the
trap of playing too many winning shots which didn't find
their mark. The trouble with unforced errors in American
scoring games is that you not only fail to take a point but
that point goes to your opponent. Matt played his percentage
game superbly in the first set and took it with a little to
spare. The second game was much closer as Dave built a three
point advantage. Matt was looking a little tired but instead
of keeping the ball in court, Dave fell into the same
pattern as the first game and gave away a few cheap points.
This was enough for Matt to bide his time and pick up the
last few points to win the Final 2-0. A worthy winner and an
excellent runner up.
The Tournament was well organised and most of the credit
goes to Malc Balls for his input. A big thank you to Kaye
Chesworth for her support as usual and Jan Butler, the club
Captain for organising a very pleasant supper.
