Istanbul police have launched a major investigation into
Saturday's violent derby match between Galatasaray and
Fenerbahce.
After reviewing security camera and television footage of
the riot, police identified and arrested almost 50 people
for taking part in the violence.
Twelve men, including the well-known Galatasaray stand
leader
Yılmaz Tutuş,
were arrested for
attacking police officers. During the match, fans
repeatedly attacked police inside the stadium, and one
officer was injured. Turkish newspapers reported this week
that there was even gunfire inside the stadium, as a police
officer was forced to fire his weapon into the air after
being cornered by a mob of angry fans.
In addition to those twelve, 20 others have been arrested
for property damage. Nearly 12,000 of the stadium's seats
were torn up and destroyed during the match.
Police will continue to review surveillance footage in the
hopes of identifying further culprits.
Turkish Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip
Erdoğan hinted that the
government would try new tactics in the fight against
hooliganism in Turkey: "It
is necessary at this point to take solid steps toward
different and effective precautions toward soccer violence,"
he said.
The Turkish Football Federation's Disciplinary Committee
has not yet decided the extent of Galatasaray's punishment.
